@ Painful Quandary - You'd have to pay 5 life. You'd cast the spell so now your hand is zero, THEN this goes off. If you have no cards in your hand you can not pay for discard costs.
That's how I would play it at least.
I just realized something: This game needs Death Rattle!
“If [this card] would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, [do some effect].”
I know we have SOME cards that do 'When this hits the GY, do this.' Like the Baloth, but I think a keyword is in order! Would be a neat mechanic to see, like Madness, but for free. Obviously you won't see "Death Rattle : Put a big token into play." You'll probably see more along the lines of "Death Rattle : Discard a card without Death Rattle, then draw a card." or "Gain 3 Life. Death Rattle : Gain 1 life." Would help combat milling (IDK how big of an issue this is tho ... I am sure it is popular in some format tho...) and discard annoyance (Megrim and Lilly Caress)

because of the way resources work in WoW, there is no possible equivalent in Magic, and because of the way combat works in Magic, there's no way this could work in Magic.

Never say never. Resources are completely different then lands and mana and combat is totally different, but it could work. Maybe not a 5/5 for 0, 3/3 I think at THE MOST (since SoM is giving us a 1/1 for 0 and still with a drawback. It's hard coming up with a draw back in Magic, it's either TO BIG of a draw back or not big enough.
Just gonna go off and start theory-crafting so I will put it in a spoiler, but you are MORE then welcome to read on...

The highest P/T to cost in a single card is Death's Shadow, but you need to be at 12 or less life for it to even live long enough to resolve on the battlefield. To have him be a 3/3 you need to be at 10 life. I am looking for something you can just play off the bat, so waiting around isn't an option and taking 10 damage is not an option either.
Next highest is Phyrexian Dreadnought, a 12/12 Trampler for 1, but you need to sacrifice creatures to total 12+ power. A hassle to do such a thing, but there ARE ways around it (IE. Vision Charm or Illusionary Mask) but I don't care about those ways right now.
The third spot goes to three 3/3s:
Sleeper Agent - You lose the 3/3 to your opponent and they take 2 each turn. Kind of a cool effect that you lose it and it hurts them, but I want to keep this guy.
Rogue Elephant - Sac a Forest or sac this. Seems fine, but what would the land sac be for a 0 drop? 2? or is that to low? 3? No ... to high ...
Cinder Wall - a 3/3 Wall, it being a wall is a draw back already. It can stop some guys charging in and even take them down. It's second drawback has you sacing this when it DOES block, so ... that sucks since it can't attack!
So, if it's BIG it'll have a large drawback which can be taken care of later on and I want this 0 drop to be doing stuff right now. A cheap 3/3 is going to have you sacing something or taking damage (Sleeper hurts opponent ALSO, but its hitting you for more then the Sleeper is dealing, unless you First Turn : Lotus, Contaminated Bond, Sleeper Agent. Three Card Magic FTW!)
So what can we do? Well, let's make it an Artifact Creature, opens it up to more removal to combat it.
Okay, what else? Well ... Discarding a card COULD benefit the caster, in fact, the caster might base their deck around just dropping this guy to dump something important (Like Basking Rootwalla, so now they have a 3/3 and a 1/1 and haven't even dropped a land or Riftstone Portal, now any land I drop also taps for G or W. Two examples of many.) so I want to avoid discarding my hand. Instead of discard ... how about they exile their hand? Very few spells can get those cards back (I can really only think of Pull from Eternity) and nothing in this set would be able to grab back Exiled cards, so that probably would work, but is it to much? And they can always drop this with no cards in their hand.
What about loss of life? Kind of would make it feel like a vampire or something that drains the caster of life, flavor wise that could work, but how much life is to much? 5 usually seems like the 'Ouch, that hurt a lot, but I am still standing' and anything over might be ... to much. Well, I can lose lands over this? Again, I could just drop this with no lands out. Well ... I can tinker around with Emblems ... Can't I? Rather then losing 5 life, I can make them slowly lose life through an emblem, or gimp any further creatures they play, make it impossible to cast XYZ. Alright, let's try that ...
lose 1 life during upkeep/draw/untap/end.

I want a playset, or maybe more. This is one of those crazy but fun cards you can build decks around.

So far, this stood out the most to me.
All my guys have SS and I can regen them for 1G, very nice. 3GG CC, but I don't think Green has a problem getting that much mana.
