Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
Venser would be so much better if you could do his abilities at instant speed. A shame ...
Elspeth is a nice reset button. Yes I will keep all my lands my tokens and you can lose all your non-lands.
Metalcraft seems cool. I can seecraft being used in the future as long as you control 3+ of something.
Am I reading Memnite correct? 0 for an artifact that does nothing? I guess it helps get to Metalcraft, but I am SURE that this can be used in combination with other construct pieces (?) to build something. Kind of like the fusion system they have in YuGiOh. Take X creatures, cast this card, those X creatures become one big ass creature.

Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
I really like the two new Planewalkers. Elspeth continues to be insanely powerful (possibly even better than the original) and Venser could be a lot of fun in the right kind of deck (like my Aethermage's Touch deck). Metalcraft could be... interesting?

Quicksilver Gargantuan 5UU
Creature - Shapeshifter
you may have Quicksilver Gargantuan enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield, except it's still 7/7.
"You know you have achieved true power if the sea itself seeks to emulate your greatness."
-Vy Covalt, Neurok agent
Illus. Steven Belledin #39/249 7/7
For Steve's ETB deck. Silly Persist shenanigans!

All the zeal of the Sylvok with only a trace of their conservancy.

they are retreading a LOT of Mirrodin cycles. they reprinted the mana Myrs, and made new Spellbomb and Replica cycles...

i think the featured article on the mothersite includes all of the mechanics and excludes none. so no entwine
Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
Two more new ones.
Chimeric Mass X
Rare
Artifact
~ enters the battlefield with X charge counters.
1: ~ becomes a Construct Artifact Creature with P/T equal to the number of charge counters on it.
Not bad. P/T can continue to change, which is both good and bad. I am sure people will find a way to abuse this.
Tempered Steel 1WW
Rare
Enchantment
Artifact creatures you control get +2/+2.
Very nice. Here's something to add to that Artifact Big Deck to whom ever was working on it.
Also, Mindslaver is back at Mythic rarity and with new artwork. Artwork I am not a fan of sadly

Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
bold assertion: Scars of Mirrodin = best of Mirrodin block.
just the set as a whole is looking very similar to the entirety of the original block... i know it's early, but i can't help but read the writing on the wall. when such a large percentage of the spoiled cards could have been printed back then, it makes me wonder.
Platinum Angel ---> Platinum Emperion
Chrome Mox ---> Mox Opal
Mindslaver ---> Mindslaver
Trinket Mage ---> Trinket Mage
Spellbombs ---> new Spellbombs
Replicas ---> new Replicas
mana Myr ---> same mana Myr
Summoner's Egg ---> Clone Shell
Bonesplitter ---> Darksteel Axe
i really hope this trend is just a coincidence based on only these early spoilers.
the only part of SoM that's radically different is the Phyrexian watermarked cards... i have a feeling the ratio of these cards in each following set will increase.

Well, SoM is a set released a couple years after the first Mirrodin block. There are all sorts of new cards that SoM needs to stay in balance with; plus there are LOADS of new mechanics to be used or created for this block.
I don't think it is a block assertion at all. I love Mirrodin block, probably my favorite set out of ANY other set. SoM is bringing that love back for me and I am glad. Mirrodin block is all old and grown up, SoM is the cute new baby on the block.
I just hope we see some stuff related to Glissa, Slobad, and Bosh. I love those guys and that gal!

Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
I can't tell, Steve, are you expressing disappointment in the innovation department since there seem to be so many parallels?
I, for one, am excited to see their new take on old cycles/mechanics. I'm also curious to see how the Phyrexian influence will skew things.
I'm sure I'm the billionth person to say this, but we know about "Scars of Mirrodin" and "Mirrodin Beseiged." We also know that "New Phyrexia" and "Mirrodin Pure" are copyrighted, even though there's only one set left. I'm trying to think how they could possibly put both into the last set and not completely fuck up limited.
For example, how would draft work? You need 3 packs, so you can't mix and match. I can't imagine they would just let you decide, since that would cause some extreme balance and randomness issues ("Damn, I got stuck at the table where everyone opened New Phyrexia, and I had Mirrodin Pure. I had to give up my first picks!"). Likewise, I can't imagine they would do it randomly, since it makes odd numbered pods imbalanced.

Yeah ... a bit of a weird analogy I guess ... What I mean is Mirrodin is still AWESOME, but SoM is like the NEW AWESOME! That probably makes less sense tho/

Slyphidine wrote:I can't tell, Steve, are you expressing disappointment in the innovation department since there seem to be so many parallels?
sort of. i'm sure there will be a lot of brand-new, independent design here... but i can't tell what their thought process is:
a) "Mirrodin was super-popular! let's just do it over again."
b) "uh oh, another artifact set. i'm out of ideas!"
c) "we're running out of design space here. we have to mete our design across this block carefully to make it last."
it definitely seems to be a "block design" block like Ravnica was, so i think i just need more time and information.
don't get me wrong. i LOVE Mirrodin, and am super-excited for the whole block. plus i do like what i see so far. but i'm just criticizing the overall feel of the set (as a thought experiment, nothing more), which is venturing too close to the entire original Mirrodin block. so maybe it's closer to a Time Spiral for the Mirrodin block.
Re: Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler
I think SoM will be probably more like Invasion (never really played it, just go along with it) where it has an underline theme, artifacts, but it has forces going against said theme and you will slowly see one side falter as the next two sets in Scars come out (although, they already said Mirrodin Pure and New Phyrexia will be the next two sets in Scars and released at the same time).
Kind of like how Torment (was that in Invasion? Whatever ...) was like HUGE on Black, because Black was corrupting everything and taking over. They even had lines of creatures in Torment that went from one color to Black and got a boost. I think SoM will do the same thing, you will see artifacts being big and everywhere, then it slowly dwindles and the other colors take over because they are corrupting the once pure Mirrodin.
Example of what I mean:
SoM = Giant Golem, 10/10 Indestructible, Wins Game
Next Set = Smaller Golem, 5/5 Indestructible
Last Set = Rusted Golem, 0/5
A stupid example, but it's how I, as the insane game designer as I am, thinks. It's like advancing to the next level in a stage, but backwards. Instead of you getting stronger, you get weaker. But if you play Pyhrexian...
SoM = Phyrexian Metal Eater, 1/1
Next Set = Phyrexian Hyena, 3/3, +3/+3 against Artifacts
Last Set = Big Phyrexian Dude, 9/9 Indestructible, Deathtouch vs. Artifacts
You get stronger at the end, but are weaker at the start. Since they are doing the Pure and New sets at the same time, I think it will go like this.
Set = Artifacts/Phyrexians
SoM = Equal / Equal
Pure Mirrodin = All / None
New Phyrexia = None / All
I also REALLY hope they do a 'Faction Only' card ... Something like this ...
Phyrexian Death Guy of Awesomeness
3BB
Creature - Awesomesaurus Rex
Phyrexian Allegiance (Your deck can not contain cards of other Allegiances nor can you control cards of any other Allegiances.)
Trample, Deathtouch
7/7
Then they'd have spells like ...
Mirrodin Gauntlet of Death
5
Artifact - Equip
Mirrodin Alliegiance (Your deck can not contain cards of other Allegiances nor can you control cards of any other Allegiances.)
If equipped creature has Deathtouch and hits an opponent, that opponent loses the game.
Equip 3
See ... So you have two cards that = game win, but you can't use them in the same deck and you can never gain control of it to get that perfect game winning combo.
Hopefully this all makes sense to someone.

Koth of the Hammer 2RR
Planeswalker - Koth
+1: Untap target Mountain. It becomes a 4/4 red Elemental creature until end of turn. It's still a land.
-2: Add R to your mana pool for each Mountain you control.
-5: You get an emblem with "Mountains you control have 'Tap: This land deals 1 damage to target creature or player.'"
3
I like him. In RDW, he either provides a 4/4 haste beater the turn you play him, or lets you cast another 4 drop threat. I have delusions of "winning more" with his ultimate in Valakut.

Koth - Awesome to see a new Red Planeswalker. I like how he rolls too, must be an Earthbending Planeswalker xD

Now we know why they call it "Bonesplitter." Zing!
Also would be funny with:
Adventuring Gear
Diviner's Wand
Hammer of Ruin
Konda's Banner
Quietus Spike
Sword of the Meek
Tenza, Godo's Maul
And my favorite, Heartseeker.
