~BIG DECK~ Discussion

I was thinking of add Traumatize to the B&R list. I know no one is running it yet, but I've heard several people bring up the idea of putting in their deck just to mill themselves and dump 100+ cards in the graveyard. I think this might be a touch broken in the format, but let me know what you think.

i'd wait for it to happen. i almost put Mind Funeral in my deck until i read the damn card. it says "target opponent". i'll make a poll for it.

then again, in another game, he recovered from a Plague Spores and a Wasteland on a Boros Garrison and Arctic Flats, respectively (dropping him to one mana to my six), and beat me down with Kitchen Finks.

Hey, Im going to cyborg 1 tomorrow for an official 5 color tournament. The tourny starts at 2pm, and Ill be going there around 1pm. If anyone is interested, call me, or just come to cyborg 1. There will be extra decks available for people, and the tourny is only 10 dollars.

The store is nice, with a great owner, and the 5 color players are some of the most fun people around. Its gonna be a good day.

I'll probably have some free time at work this week, so I'm going to be working on a couple of things. I'll be working on updating the banned and restrict list, so there might be a few more polls up this week on some more contentious cards. I'm also going to be working a Big Deck hand-out that we can give to people at AU and other events who ask about Big Deck and might be interested in building on. This would include our rules, the B&R list, and a link to the forum.

If it's possible, once the hand-out is done I'd like to make it a sticky in this forum section. I'd also ask if we do that we have some people post up example deck lists for people to check out. Actual Big Deck discussion would stay in this thread.

Just to note, adding to the B&R list: Limited Resources. I've also asked Steve to put up a poll about banning Anathamancer, since we've banned Price of Progress.

Edit: Going through some of the standard B&R lists on Magic, and I think we should add the "Wish" cards as well to our list, since we don't allow side-boards or cards from outside the game typically.

Edit: We also might want to consider banning Poison, since it's fairly stupid and seems to be a bit of un-fun mechanic.

Good point. Poison does seem pretty weak, I just figured I'd mention it.

I dont think there have been any problems with powerful decks in our playgroup. We never make broken plays that combo out or lock down the board. I have never seen anything that is so overpowered that I want to remake my deck with it. Why the hell are we banning all these cards when we have never had any problems with the format?

I suggested we ban the Wishes since we don't use side-boards, and with the recent rules errata from Magic that means they can't get exiled cards, basically they serve no purpose. We don't necessarily need to ban them, but we should make a note that they have no effect (similar to ante cards).

I asked a poll be put up for Anathemancer since he's banned in the official multi-colored formats and since we already banned the similar Price of Progress here. I have no problem running him, but I wanted to make it fair and put it up for vote.

Limited Resources is up because it's banned in most highlander, multiplayer, and casual formats. I'll put it on the list because it just makes games suck.

Edit: But yeah, John's right. All banned and restricted discussion is suspended after the current cards are decided on. If a card becomes a problem we'll look at it afterward.

agreed. i'll give everyone another few days to vote, and then the motions are carried, and the banned list will be frozen until further notice, i.e. something stupid happens that pisses everyone off.

Steve has posted up a new sticky thread with the Big Deck rules, we'll be creating some print outs to hand to some hopeful converts at AU and other events. Please keep all general Big Deck Discussion to this thread.

If it is possible though, I'd really like to see some posts in the sticky thread with deck lists from various Big Deck players. I'm working on generating one right now, I'll probably post it up tomorrow.

i sac'd the EDH deck in favor of a big deck. kinda hard to playtest it, ha. Hope its decent.

you shouldn't. your first iteration isn't going to be perfect, it just needs to exist. it's not so much about the card choices, it's about the randomness that comes from a super large deck.

I found most of my early deck ideas were a mixed of necessity, copying others, and stupid cards I enjoy.

Now that I think about it, my deck isn't that different now...

Counter target spell or ability an opponent controls that targets that damn Maze of Ith you control. If a permanent's ability is countered this way, destroy that permanent.
