Rise of the Eldrazi Spoiler

Post  Slyphidine on Mon Mar 15, 2010 8:29 am

The first few cards are trickling in. Nothing too exciting so far, though it does give a nice look at the mechanics of the set (minus the rumored "leveler" mechanic).

i'm underwhelmed. yet another buyback rip-off (remember retrace?)... Totem armor is ANOTHER way to get people to play with auras that aren't Armadillo Cloak or Rancor (keep trying, Wizards). is it just me, or are the Eldrazi the Marit Lage of Limited? deal with it within a round, or lose.

I will say rebound has this over retrace, buyback, and flashback: it's free. As we've learned in the past year, free spells are kinda good and frequently abusable. Maybe not Elvish Fury free spells, but what about something like this:

4UU
Bouncy Inspiration
Instant
Draw 2 cards
Rebound

Someone posted in the forums that Totem Armor is a way to keep your opponent's Abyssal Persecutor from dying... because obviously most people are killing their Abyssal Persecutor by dealing 6 to it. It's called bounce, sacrifice, remove from game exile. Anyway, 5 mana is a lot to pay for that ability outside (and frequently inside) limited.

When 2 Eldrazi face off against each other, is the winner the one who attacks (and annihalates) first? Seems like it to me.

Remember there are about 220 cards left to see here.

Oh, one more thing. The art on Pathrazer is really cool. Dude with 4 arms, each with 6 fingers, and two massive tentacled legs just smashing things in his path. Look at the people being thrown up in the air.

Did I say tentacled? Should we look for a reprint of this little lady?

"What are you people doing in my corpse hatch? Oh, did I say 'corpse hatch?' I meant 'innocence tube'!"

someone on MTGS pointed out that little Simpsons connection. i daresay i'll say that every time i play this spell.

Unimpressed. Hopefully the rest looks good.

Rebound is meh ... Free spell that you MAY cast while it is removed until your next turn (can't leave it floating until you want to use it, I think), which is kind of like a few cards now. This link isn't the best example, but I am to lazy and tired to look for another.

Annihilator is alright, the player sacing the stuff pick what goes so if its annihilator vs annihilator, the person with the fewer perm will lose faster. Its a good ability, I just hope they don't overkill it and slap it on every colorless creature.

Totem Armor is cool, but that's about it. If the chanted creature was gonna die, just kill this chant to prevent that. Kind of like being Indestructible once. But, like Dan said, Abyssal Persecutor can just be bounced. You'd need to give the Abyssal indestructible and shroud (preferably one that can't be targeted also). Even then, I don't see Abyssal Persecutor as so much of a threat that you need to think about doing either. I get it, its a 6/6 flier with trample for 4 and it can do some serious damage ... I am just not overly impressed with it, or not as much as the other fan boys who fap to it at night.

Why not this guy or this. Free spells have been, by and large, some of the most degenerate in the game.

They need something that is good though, a weaker Giant Growth doesn't cut it. Now if it was damage or card draw, that'd be a different story.

Right, but my point is that when I see a new mechanic that lets you play spells for free, my first instinct is not to think about how much it sucks.

Agreed, I'm referring more to the Eldrazi themselves and the whole 'Annihilator' thing. Doesn't seem that cool of a mechanic to me, though I guess we'd have to take it as part of the set as a whole.

Fair enough... but I expect to see none of those unfun Eldrazi cards in your big deck. Smile

Probably true. It looks like you'll need to cheat them out with 'Eldrazi Spawn' or whatever their called, without they they're just big, bomb-y guys that cast 10+ mana. I'd rather just play Akroma or something at that point...

Almost every block for the last few years has had a +2/+2 effect for G, to showcase a set ability.

which one is best? i like Might of Old Krosa, and Groundswell is a moderate second, IMHO. this one really is no different.

Bunch of new cards on the spoiler, including the new Level Up mechanic (looks neat).

Here's Wizard's visual spoiler: http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/riseoftheeldrazi/spoiler

Look, they made a better Sengir Autocrat!

Emrakul's Hatcher 4R
Creature - Eldrazi Drone
When Emrakul's Hatcher enters the battlefield, put three 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creatures onto the battlefield. They have "Sacrifice this creature: add 1 to your mana pool."
3/3
