Re: T2 Valakut
just a question, not a knock, but it seems awfully dependent on Valakut to win. What if they spreading seas or ruinblaster? How often did you draw into 2 or more Valakuts?

Re: T2 Valakut
First, it is quite dependant on Valakut to win, but not completely. Siege-Gang and Rampaging Baloths do pretty well themselves (or so I'm told, I have yet to get Baloths out). In fact, one game I ran out of mountains to throw at my opponent, so the siege-gang did the rest.
Second, I have 4 Valakuts and 4 Expedition Map to find Valakut. Plus, you do so much land thinning that you draw into your "unthinnable" cards more frequently. I regularly have at least 2 Valakuts out.
Third, if you're playing against an opponent who might Spreading Seas or Acidic Slime or Mold Shambler or Ruinblaster your Valakut, you play them last (when you're at 5 mountains and 2 counters on a Khalni Guide Expedition, for instance). If they Acidic Slime or Spreading Seas your other lands, Harrow the land in response.

Re: T2 Valakut
i've watched a LOT of this on MTGO, and it really wins often. it's hella boring though. most versions online have less green, and more burn. Jund still beats it more often than not though.
Re: T2 Valakut
i agree, i dont imagine its that much fun just putting lands down trying to win.
I like how there isnt ONE deck currently in this standard environment that is dominating.
I suppose Jund is the leader but their are several builds of it atleast, and it has decks it cant beat easy but those decks lose to other decks easy so...
Lots of interesting options and everyone thinks THEIR deck is the ONE.

Re: T2 Valakut
Call me a land-playin fool, but I think it's a lot of fun to play, inasmuch as combo decks are fun to play. You assemble the pieces together to create an unlosable situation.
Fun is of course subjective, but here are some things that I find fun about a magic deck:
1. The ability to cause large amounts of damage
2. The ability to swing in with a huge group of big creatures
3. The ability to drown my opponent with my card advantage
4. The ability to make big splashy plays
So with this deck:
1. I've cast Harrow to deal 18 damage
2. I've yet to do it, but I can easily see dropping Rampaging Baloths and quickly getting 2 4/4's as sidekicks
3. Oracle of Mul Daya makes for some crazy plays:
Play Oracle
Flip a non-land
Crack Expedition Map, get Valakut
Shuffle, flip a Mountain
Play Valakut
Play Mountain
Repeat next turn
It gets even more ridiculous in multiples.
4. As for splashy plays, with my opponent at 15 and me at around 10, he plays Conqueror's Pledge with 2 Honor the Pure in play. I have 2 Valakut and 4 Mountains in play, plus Khalni Heart Expedition with one counter on it, and a Rampant Growth in hand. I draw Mountain, play it, Play Rampant Growth, get a mountain, deal 6, sac the expedition, deal 12, game. That's just pure awesomeness.
But I'm not going to sit here and try to convince you it's fun... oops, just did. Sleeve it up and try it.
I'm sure Wolsky won't find it that fun, but then, he likes to masturbate with Ichorids.

Re: T2 Valakut
I'm thinking of building a Crypt of Agadeem deck after seeing a BU control deck that John W. was playing last week. I'll try to proxy is out and bring it around this weekend.
Anyone going to AU on Friday or Recap's on Sunday?

Re: T2 Valakut
Needs more Chain Reactions...and Explore has been very hit/miss for me in testing. It works better when you are playing some Spheres, but sometimes you just don't have enough lands in your hand (since most are generated through spells). It IS definitely correct NOT to cut Rampant Growth for it, though.

Why Chain Reaction and not say, pyroclasm or volcanic fallout? Arent your intended sweep targets 1 and 2 toughness dudes typically?

Putrid Leech, Broodmate Dragon, Thrinax (ugh), Wild Nacatl, Captain of the Watch + Honor of the Pure, dudes with a Behemoth Sledge on them. Sometimes you get lucky against a Baneslayer Angel, Knight of the Reliquary, and Sphinx of Jwar Isle (especially if you can land a Siege Gang Commander first). 2 damage hasn't cut it in a while; that's why nobody runs Fallout anymore. The only deck where all the creatures die to pyroclasm is, sadly, Valakut.
