Played my first standard in about a year last night at Redcaps. They have a competitive and a casual tournament running at the same time; the competitive is $5 entry, 1st and 2nd place win 60/40 percent of the total fee. Casual is free with no prize. I went competitive with Valakut!

For those that haven't seen it, it's basically just a mana ramp to get to where you kill your opponent. Really fast. It's also cheap as hell. I'll post a decklist another time.

I ended up losing in the top 4, actually completely throwing away the game to inexperience. With my opponent at 17, I had the opportunity to deal 18 to him... instead I dealt 0. I died next turn. But the deck is lots of fun to play, and surprisingly resilient and quick. In one match, my opponent was at 15, and I was around 5. He had two Honor of the Pure on the board and had just cast Conqueror's Pledge. And then I untapped an dealt 16 to him. That happened a lot.

Anyway, I'll post more details about it later, but it was definitely a fun, cheap deck to play.
