Re: James's No Rare Cube
Zendikar questions.
Does Vampire Lacerator replace Carnophage, do they both belong, or does only Carnophage stay in?
Opinions?
Blood Seeker: If he belongs, which i believe he does, what comes out in black?
Burst Lightning?
Journey to Nowhere?
What else goes in from Zen?

Re: James's No Rare Cube
I love Burst Lightning. I'm still considering it for mine.
Hmm... Lacerator vs Carnophage. One could argue that you can turn off the Carnophage, but in that case you're losing anyway. I think I like Lacerator a little more.
I don't think Blood Seeker is good enough. He's great late game, but early he just sits there while your opponents play better 2 drops. His real strength comes in multiples. That, and remembering his trigger.
Gatekeeper of Malakir, Kazandu Blademaster, and Vampire Nighthawk are really good uncommons to consider. The Gatekeeper is crippling in a heavy black deck.
Oh, and thanks for posting yours on here! I have to take a look through and see if I have any comments (though I shouldn't, since I helped build it).
Have you considered Barrow Ghoul?

Re: James's No Rare Cube
I think Vampire Nighthawk deserves to be in both Dan's and James's cube, a 2/3 flier with deathtouch and life-link for just 3cc is pretty insane. I run it my Big Deck, and it makes a fine creature-based addition.
Re: James's No Rare Cube
He does compare favorably to Knight of Meadowgrain, and I think he's better than Hypnotic Specter. He may be added in.
Re: James's No Rare Cube
Way better than Hyppie... I use to love that black specter, but I'm learned that he's just a 2/2 for 3cc that flies and has a nice ability, that's all. I'd rather pay 1 more and get two more combat-relevant abilities and the extra toughness.
Besides, discard has never been that big in the Cube as far as I can tell.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Actually, discard can be devastating in the cube. It's pretty tough to come back from ritual, hymn, duress (which I drafted once). And truthfully, it's usually easier to recover from ritual into 2/3 flying deathtouch/lifelink, than ritual into 2/2 discard a card at random each turn. The 2/3 has the advantage of not being able to be blocked and killed easily in the early game, and is a better aggro creature. Or so I believe.
Discard in the cube includes
Hypnotic Specter
Okiba-Gang Shinobi
Duress
Thoughtseize
Hymn to Tourach
Liliana Vess
Nath of the Gilt Leaf
Void
Cruel Ultimatim
Hyppie isn't coming out, he's just getting a new friend.

These are the Zendikar additions so far
Vampire Nighthawk replaced… (forgot already and im at work)
Gatekeeper of Malakir replaced Cruel Edict (he is cruel edict on a stick after all and there is still diabolic and chainer’s edict)
Hideous End replaced Expunge
Into the Roil replaced Complicate
Whiplash Trap replaced… (again, memory fails me until I get home)
Vines if Vastwood easily replaced Invigorate

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Kor Skyfisher was on my list of maybes but after looking at it more, i think it rightfully deserves a spot in my cube. It can bounce CITP creatures and Vivids amongst other useful targets.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Ins & Outs
Spidersilk Armor IN for Blanchwood Armor
My thoughts here are that Spidersilk Armor doesnt create a 2 for 1 and can be much more game changing than Blanchwood Armor
Engineered Plague IN for Contagion
I've just never seen Contagion played or used. Engineered Plague will have a longer lasting effect than Contagion.
Whispersilk Cloak IN for Skull Catapult
Whispersilk can easily change or end a game. Skull Catapult cannot say the same.
Burst Lightning IN for Magma Jet.
Magma Jet is meh, this seems a pretty easy to understand substitution.
Hellfire Mongrel IN for Mogg Fanatic
I want to try this guy, seems solid in either 1 on 1 or especially group games. Mogg had to go regardless.
I'll listen to any suggestions over the Mongrel, but for now, he is in.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Must say that I respectfully disagree with some of those choices.
Blanchwood Armor does give you the opportunity to get 2-for-1'd, but it also just wins games if you can't deal with it. The only thing that hurts it is the lack of evasion, which is why Armored Ascension was a huge swing card in m10/shadowmoor draft. If you're looking for something that will stick on the board longer, the closest I can come to it is Vulshock Battlegear, the +3/+3 uncommon equipment from Mirrodin. Spidersilk Armor is a much more defensive card. Maybe the difference can be best phrased: You play Blanchwood Armor to win, but you play Spidersilk Armor to not lose.
I love Contagion, but see how Engineered Plague works out. Seems to me it would be more of a sideboard card, but again, try it out. And as much as I love Contagion, it gets no love in my cube either.
Skull Catapult can be devastating, but it is more "build-around." Without damage on the stack, it's definitely weaker too. Whispersilk must be dealt with, though it is kinda slow. But I'm fine with this.
I feel like Magma Jet is superior to Burst Lightning, as it deals the damage while smoothing out your draws. I do think that Burst Lightning has a role in your cube, though. What about replacing Shock? After all, Burst Lightning is strictly better than it.
As for Hellfire Mongrel, I'm curious as to how it plays out.
And that's my 2 cents.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Agreed on Burst for Shock, will make that change and Magma Jet goes back in.
Ill reconsider Blanchwood Armor coming out, but i still feel like Spidersilk belongs.
Do you disagree?
I know you are short on time, but when you get a chance, review my green cube cards.
Still would like others to offer their views as well, so chime in people.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Suggestions needed for "Un Cards" for the cube.
1 from each color and potentially 1 for artifacts
All must be non rare and not mess with legal tourney game rules (no half point cards, no destroying cards, etc...)
So far Booster Tutor is a lock for black.
Currently Carniverous Death-Parrot is a personal favorite for blue for its fun flavor but Cheatyface could potentially take its place. Its a tough choice... The Parrot is more likely to stick over the Cheatyface but both provide some fun.
1 option for Green i saw today was Side to Side: http://magiccards.info/uh/en/110.html
1 option for Red i thought would be fun is Face to Face: http://magiccards.info/uh/en/76.html
1 fun option for artifacts is Togglodyte: http://magiccards.info/uh/en/129.html
No ideas on land or multi colored cards yet.
Any suggestions welcome!

Re: James's No Rare Cube
after further review these are the potential cards IMo to be included in the cube.
There are some real playable cards here, i may potentially include TWO for each color after reviewing the options.
white (kinda weak options)
AWOL
emcee
man of measure
green
Creature Guy
elvish house party
g;uetius maximus
keeper of the sacred word
land aid '04
laughing hyena
blue
Cheatyface
mouth to mouth
number crunch
question elemental
spell counter
red
Deal Damage
rocket powered turbo slug
six-y beast
black
eye to eye
kill destroy!
mother of goons
phyrexian librarian
stop that (personal pet peeve of mine is incessant audible shuffling of cards)
tainted monkey
the fallen apart
artifact
mana screw
my first tome
rod of spanking
toy boat

Re: James's No Rare Cube
I don't think I'm a huge fan of that many un-cards in the cube, but I respect your zany zany decision.
Blue: I would avoid Cheatyface, as he's such an obnoxious card. I want to say use Number Crunch, though I'm not sure how much less obnoxious it is. It is hilarious, though ("Cards in hand?" Gotcha!). Steve is a fan of Censorship too
White: AWOL infuriates me since I still have no clue what it really does.
Red: Frazzled Editor is kinda nasty. Or The Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast.
Black: I've won games with Tainted Monkey, though I agree about Stop That.
Green: I like Symbol Status. I do have a foil Glueteous Maximus if you want it, though.

it exiles a dude, then exiles it from the exiled zone so that cards like Pull from Eternity can't ever get it back. nothing can return it to the game ever.
Re: James's No Rare Cube
*bump*
need to decide atleast 1 "un"card from every color and artifact possibly also.
Last votes to be considered start now.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
I would say Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast for Red, since they've recently printed its instant version, Comet Storm, as a rare, and it's going in the cube. Though losing instant speed hurts it quite a bit. That or the Slug (which is quite good).
Re: James's No Rare Cube
played a ton of cube games this weekend as i had a friend staying at my place for the holiday. I forgot how much fun it is and how easy it is to shuffle it right back up and keep playing over and over.
My friend is still learning the game so we drafted 10 to 15 times, playing 1 on 1. Sometimes the drafts were so crooked in my favor we would only play one game and i'd offer to reshuffle and draft again so he could continue to learn which cards need to be picked sooner.
I have yet to include cards from the 2 most recent sets as i have to decide what gets cut. It made me hungry for cube games again though, so lets organize something soon. Im not completely moved in yet but im close enough that i can finally not feel bad taking a night or weekend day to go play magic again.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
Wolsky and i winston'ed my cube yesterday afternoon.
Fun was had.
He won a close game 3 beating me down with a bone shredder several turns in a row before dropping another flyer then sac'ing to goblin bombardment FTW. I was holding a marsh casualties, and in hindsight i should have not waited to try to 2 for 1 and instead hosed the boneshredder and trusted my deck to find me an another answer to win.
Most weeknights i dont do much. If anyone feels like coming downtown to my house to cube (once this 100 degree shit passes) just hit me up.

Re: James's No Rare Cube
It was a fun draft yesterday. Winston is really hard with cube cause all the cards are so powerful that you dont really want to pass on any of them. I drafted Goblin Bombardment and it is absolutely insane. I never realized how good that card actually is.
