MBS prerelease stories Empty SOM Pre Release Events... or lack their of...

Post  intrinsic Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:58 pm

So i expected atleast one or 2 of you to report how you did. Get on it.

Meanwhile i can report how i DIDNT do.
Saturday i planned to possibly play and atleast attend the event downtown but was sidetracked by a worthy cause i wont go into. Then Sat night i hear that comics and More pre release is canceled due to weather delaying the product getting to them. bummer. So I find out Cyborg is holding an event, and decide to trek all the way there with Chuck.
We get there and find out they have a power outage on the entire block, tourney is canceled.
Evil or Very Mad
What a waste. Really wanted to play this set and pick up the prerelease card.

well, i chose Phyrexia for my Sealed flight on Saturday, standing by it despite Dan's admonition against it. he said that you have two choices: building the good infect deck, or building the bad infect deck. i built the bad infect deck.

i had a Bonehoard. that was really my only bomb, and it never got to shine. i landed it as a 4/4 once, but a Shatter took it out. the other time, my opponent cleverly exiled my graveyard with Nihil Spellbomb, then used the double Raise Dead to deplete his, killing my Germ via state-based effects.

this opponent was very skilled. it seemed his mono-black Phyrexia deck was light on infect too, however he stocked his deck with extra non-infectors and managed to have an even spread. he could win through regular damage or through poison. in fact, he simultaneously beat me one game through both methods. plus he had a boatload of removal, with a Grasp of Darkness and at least two Spread the Sickness.

then me and Jim thought it would be fun to run Mirran in a Two-Headed Giant.

BIG MISTAKE.

turns out it still takes just ten poison counters to topple a two-headed giant, while it still took 30 regular damage. so at a 3-to-1 disadvantage out of the gates, we still managed to come VERY CLOSE to winning in each round we played, but ultimately we fell. the first round we got the other team to one, and i wouldn't have held it against them at all if they weren't so douchy. in fact, i would have had good memories of that match thanks to its razor-thin margin. instead i remember our opponents calling us out swiftly on purported mistakes before reading the fucking card and me calmly reminding them of the rules.

in summation, i had fun, but it was a shitshow.

You'll be happy to know I went 1-2 in Sealed and 0-2 in 2HG with Steve.

My sealed Phyrexian pool was pretty good, including a Blightsteel Colossus and a Inkmoth Nexus. I ended up going BWG infect, using Revoke Existence, Dispense Justice, Choking Fumes and Spread the Sickness as my removal suite. My infect creatures were pretty good (all from MBS, none from SOM) but my mana base was terrible (1 colored Myr, no Horizon spell-bombs or duals).

Round 1 - Opponent playing BW infect, went 2-0. I managed to get turn 1 Inkmoth games 1 and 2, which pretty much ran him over. I also landed Blightsteel Colossus in game 2, earning me a nice win there. Otherwise it was a lot of infect guys trading off.

Round 2 - Opponent played mono-blue, went 0-2. I pretty much got run over here by multiple Vedalkin Anatomists, counter spells, and a Consecrated Sphinx. I really couldn't keep anything on the board the entire time; the Anatomists are really nasty (provided you have 3 mana free a turn).

Round 3 - Opponent played BW infect, went 0-2. Black Sun Zenith is a really nasty card, my opponent used it multiple times to wipe my board. Problems with my shaky mana-base pretty much finished me off here and I dropped after that.

I won't go into the horror that was my 2HG with Steve outside to say they were the worst 8 packs I've ever opened. Not a single piece of removal in 120 cards...

Yeah... those guys in the first round could have killed us a couple of times early in the match had they just thought a bit. Still, we managed to get them down to 1 life before being proliferated to death, so that wasn't so bad. The 2nd round though was just a shit-fest...

But yeah, needing only 10 poison counters to win is kind of bullshit, it gives the Phyrexian players a huge advantage over the 30 damage needed to normally win for the Mirrians.

I played three tournaments and traded like crazy.

At the big prerelease on Saturday, I went Mirran just for more options, opening Mirran Crusader. I also had a foil Into the Core to compliment my 2 Burn the Impures and decent metalcraft package, so I went WR. I ended up going 3-0-1 for the first time since Darksteel. Incidentally, I played Steve's mono black opponent in round 3, and he was quite good. He had some solid bombs as well, and I made some play mistakes. But I was able to overwhelm him with board advantage, and won the last game by casting Burn the Impure on Phyrexian Juggernaut while my opponent was at a low life total. My play of the day was against an opponent playing green. I boarded in 2 Koth's Courier, and played them turn 3 and turn 4. On turn 6 I cast True Conviction. His Thrun sat there helplessly as I raced and won.

I also managed to trade for foil Armageddon, Yavimaya Elder, Grave Titan, and Gaea's Cradle. I got 4 foil Invigorates muy cheapo, and picked up a Thrun. Finally, as posted elsewhere, the reject rare cube is over halfway done at this point. Yay!

I went to 7th Dimension games on Sunday afternoon. Parking sucked because of the snow, so I parked in the lot around the corner by the VFW. I went Phyrexian this time and opened 3 of the money rares of the set: Blightsteel Colossus, Inkmoth Nexus, and Green Sun Zenith, as well as a Mimic Vat. I had what I thought was a good BG infect deck, albeit light on removal (just a few Virulent Wounds and a Trigon of Corruption). I soon learned that a "good infect deck light on removal" = a bad infect deck. I got crushed 1-4.

Round 1 my opponent played t3 Mirran Crusader, and I couldn't keep up, nor could I draw artifacts. Round 2 I played against poison and lost in time. Round 3 I played against a bizarre BRU deck with Tezzeret and won.

Round 3.5, my car got towed, costing me $205 and about 45 minutes to get it. Most expensive sealed deck ever.

Round 4 I got back with 30 minutes on the clock, and lost to a WU control deck. I did manage to get a Phyrexian Rager on my Mimic Vat which is a pleasure I hope you all get one day.

Round 5... ok, preface...

Between rounds I was trading with a guy with a mostly mediocre binder, but who had a Korean Hatred (Korean Hatred... sounds so wrong). If you don't know, Korean cards have a high premium, because they stopped printing them around Urza's Block, I believe.

I commented, "Nice Hatred... how much is it?"
He said "Probably no more than a dollar."
Pause... flip back to the Hatred.
"This one here, right?"
"Yeah, a dollar or so."
Pause...
"I think I'm interested in it."

Regular Hatred is around $3. It's not really played anywhere, but I figured it HAD to be more than a dollar.

He also had a beat up foil Gilded Lotus he was putting pretty cheap. I got a Misty Rainforest too, and he got a bunch of Great Sable Stags. Score for team Dan.

... He turned out to be my Round 5 opponent. He was also Phyrexian, and had the fortune to open Massacre Wurm, Phyrexian Hydra, Black Sun Zenith, Contagion Engine, Carnifax Demon, and Genesis Wave (ok, the last one not so good, but the others... SICK!). Let's just say he got his karmic justice.

John W convinced me to stay and draft. I went Mirran for this one (2 faction, one scars) and quickly became the only red player at the table, also jumping into black and conveniently cutting off John. John and I scooped up all the Phyrexian Ragers; I had 3, he had 2. They are totally bonkers, especially when you chain them. I got some late bombs like Skinrender, and all the red artifact removal. My deck was just a nice combo of removal and very efficient creatures with a pretty low curve. I even won against the guy with 6 Leonin Skyhunters in his deck. That guy is common now???

My favorite play was when I learned the owner was giving out Poison dice to players who poisoned their opponents. I boarded in a Virulent Wound over a superior piece of removal, just so I could get a die. Those dice are awesome.

I went 3-0, winning 6 faction packs. One of them contained Consecrated Sphinx... hellooo Big Deck!

I also got a few foils to be added to the cube as new cards: Go For the Throat, Hero of Bladehold, and Precursor Golem, as well as a few more manlands. With the exception of the tow, a great weekend.

Yeah, but they didn't sell. The completed items were closer to 10ish.
