Draft gone horribly right - 3/14

Post  Slyphidine on Sun Mar 14, 2010 9:39 pm

Pack one pick one is a Lotus Cobra, and I find myself trying for Mono Green. A few Timbermaw Larvae and one 11th pick Bestial Menace later, and here's what I have:

2 Timbermaw Larva
2 Arbor Elf
2 Snapping Creeper
2 Gnarlid Pack
2 Nissa's Chosen
1 Baloth Woodcrasher
1 Graypelt Hunter
1 Oran-Rief Recluse
1 Mold Shambler
1 Stonework Puma
1 Lotus Cobra

1 Bestial Menace
1 Feral Contest
1 Explore
1 Savage Silhouette
1 Razor Boomerang
1 Vines of Vastwood
1 Adventuring Gear

15 Forest
1 Soaring Seacliff
1 Khalni Garden

I really liked the way this looked. All my creatures should be better than theirs, plus I have mad acceleration with Lotus Cobra and Arbor Elves.

Well, match one I lost the first game to 2 Surrukar Marauders and a Corrupted Zendikon (with him stuck on 3 land). My Timbermaw died to a Quicksand and he just raced me. I won game 2 with the timbermaw with a savage silhouette on it. Game 3, I play t1 Arbor Elf, t2 Lotus Cobra paid with the elf, play a land, play adventuring gear, equip to the cobra. Next turn he marsh casualties. I play more guys that he kills, and lose to a halo hunter that is recurred with a grim discovery (showing me Ob Nix in his grip after winning).

Match 2, I win the first game against a B/G deck after a long stalemate. Game 2 I lose during a stalemate, after I pump my woodcrasher to 14/14, attack with everyone, and he Nemesis Traps, 2 for 1ing me in the process. He then proceeds to play Abyssal Persecutor... and Gigantiform... and Sorin Markov. Game 3, he matches me creature for creature, holding my 2/x's off with a giant scorpion before getting gigantifom and blowing me out.

So I drop.

The question is, where did I go wrong? Granted, I played some bomb-laden (and good) opponents, but I really thought my deck was quite good. The only thing I can think of is my lack of removal, but in mono green, that's most of what you get. Here are my relevant sideboard cards:

Territorial Baloth (sided in a few times)
Vastwood Gorger
Burst Lightning (should I have splashed for red. I didn't for consistency and synergy sake)
Baloth Cage Trap

Any thoughts?

It seems as though removal was your problem from what you describe.
The long stalemate, the annoying scorpion holding you off, etc...
Mono green needs tramplers to win imo. If you dont have 1 or 2 tramplers to count on getting through the last bit of damage you definitely have to consider splashing whatever removal you have.
Besides, with cobra, splashing should have been made easier, no?
