Re: Trading techniques

Couple of core concepts:

1. Probably the most important is to know your values. I start out on SSG and do an advanced search in the latest set for everything over $4.99. That at least gives me an idea of what's hot in standard, which tells me a.) what I have that is worth something, and b.) what I should be looking out for. Remember to always knock about 20% off their prices. Check a few other places. I even got burned a bit this weekend when I bought Scapeshifts for $5 each (the going price online), only to find them at another store for $3. It's also good to know some random common and uncommon cards from the past that are worth something too. Like Daze, Repeal, Martyr of Sands, Rhystic Study (hmmm... mostly blue cards). Frequently people undervalue them, especially in foil.

2. Know the decks played in the major formats, and know when to take advantage of the time of year. During Extended season, your Ravnica duals, Thopter Foundries, and Remands will be worth more than the rest of the year. The opposite is also true. Also, by knowing a few of the archetypes, you can know what cards are in demand. Last night someone expressed interest in my Pact of the Titans, and since I know they're played in Hive Mind, I can value them a little higher than the $1 I paid for each of them.

3. If you're unsure what something is worth, you can make up something a little higher than you estimate. If they like it, yay, if not, then they just won't trade for it. If someone asks for a value, and you have no clue, you can say you don't know. If you're given a value that seems reasonable (based on the formats they're played in), then consider it. If they don't say anything but still want to trade for it, be very cautious.

4. Don't trade with John Wolsky.

5. Enter the trade with an open mind. True, I have a few cards in my binder that I'm very reluctant to trade, but the offer is out there. If I'm not using those 4 wrath of god and I'm offered a good deal for them, take it, and remember you can probably trade back for it later.

6. Don't hoard cards for the decks you aren't going to build. I'm especially guilty of this; I come up with a deck idea, get the cards for it, won't trade those cards away, and then I never build the deck. If you aren't going to build the deck in the next 2 weeks, consider getting good value for the cards instead.

7. Don't be afraid to walk away. If there's nothing of value (or interest) that they have, or if they're pushing you to trade something you're not sure about, just say no thanks and move on.

Just a few thoughts.

I also talked to Steve about not trading old for new. I have 2 Force of Wills in my binder, along with 2 Dual Lands. They're all for trade, but a.) I better be getting a great deal for them, and b.) I'm not trading it for the latest t2 cards. No, I don't want 5 M10 lands for my dual land, even if it is a good deal valuewise. Because when M10 lands rotate, they go to nothing, while duals will always retain their value.

Conversely, if you find someone willing to trade old for new, jump on that. The last 2 duals I picked up were for various standard staples; granted, some of them were fetches, which will retain their value, but for the Bayou I traded 2 fetches and a Hell's Thunder, which in about a year will work out to just 2 fetches.

UNREAL that bloodbraid elf out-values a number of playable rares.
Possibly the most valuable uncommon since what, -top?

And here are SSG's prices for RoE:

It's everything over $4.99 from the new set.

At a prerelease, you can frequently trade one random rare for one you want, so this can give you an idea of relative prices. Most of them are horribly inflated, but it's at least a reference point.

If you take nothing else out of this: Gideon, Vengevine, Kozilek = good!

Consume the Meek is undervalued at the moment, I think, so I'm going to try for that too.

I can't believe Vengevine is $30.... so stupid. And consume the meet is way under-rated, I'll try to pick some of them up.

Meh, going by SSC prices as of yesterday. It's probably not worth even close to that in reality. It's still a stupid card though.

Speaking of vengevine, let me tell you about this epic trade.

I was trading with this group of guys at the end of the night and one of them had 2 vengevine. I told him I would trade for them at 12 each. I couldnt get him to trade them but I picked up an elspeth and some other cards from him. Then I said I would just buy them $12 each cash. He said 2 for $25 and I said ok. So I turn around and finish up a trade with another friend of mine. His buddy comes over and begs him to trade his vengevine away. I ask how much they are worth and he says he will trade for them for $25 each. I say ok and start going through his cards. I see 4 Knight of the Reliquary and ask him how much each. He says $7 each! I pull those out along with a Ulamog, venser shaper savant, and Nicol bolas planeswalker, and give him the 2 vengevine. I am selling the knights at 13 each, the nicol bolas for 10, the venser for 2, and the ulamog for at least 5. In about 15 minutes I turned $25 into $69. Definately a sick trade.

ok, i have a confession.

i really was STILL ill-prepared for trading. it makes me so anxious. i was sort of prepared. i read all the documentation i could, including printing this thread out and another article. i just feel like i'll get ripped off, or i'll rip off someone. it's really a problem. i can't do it. so maybe i'll give some cards for John W to fence for me. he seems really good at trading. and with you guys, i will post a want/need/have list in the VERY near future.

And, the first kick in the gut.

SSG has dropped some of its RoE prices by about 25%. Sarkhan the Mad down to $15, Linvalla down to $7, Realms Uncharted down to $5.

Did All is Dust go up? Last I checked it was 8, it's now 12. Emrakul is up to 14 from 6. Gideon is 40, which it may have been at but last I checked it was in the mid 30s. Kargan Dragonlord is 8, wasn't even 5 last I checked. Khalni Hydra up to 5. Kozilek jumped 10 bucks making him a 20$ card. and Transcendent Master is 12, up from 6.

So stuff did go down, but last I checked Sarkhan was 8 and Linvalla was 5, Realms went down from 7$ to 5$ tho. I am noticing a lot of the rares being bumped up in price, last I checked they ranged from 50 cents to a buck on SCG and other sites.

I wrote down the prices of all the rares and mythics over 5$ in RotE/WW/and Zen, but I can't recall if I got them from SCG or another site ... Let's just go with that Razz
