1st pack/pick discussion CUBE! Sample A
Im sure that playing style factors heavily into these things, as does knowing the cube and what could come out of it, but the question is really just: IS THERE a definite 1st pick here? If yes, why is it clearly the right choice for 1st pick?

Re: 1st pack/pick discussion CUBE! Sample A
I take Armageddon first, then Vamp Tutor, then Decree of Justice. Armageddon will win you games, Tutors are amazing in this format, and Decree makes a ton of late game dudes at instant speed, uncounterable, and replaces itself. Definitely Armageddon here, though.

I'd probably go for Decree of Justice, but to counter Dan that's just because I don't like playing land-wrath effects. Decree is really crazy though, it wins games by itself.
I'd hope the Glare of Subdual would circle around, it's one of my personal favorite cards and I like build G/W agro-control decks when cubing.

Were we going for the most fun cube cards or strongest?
Re: 1st pack/pick discussion CUBE! Sample A
I agree with what Dan says, but I would take the vamp first. I absolutely love armageddon and take it whenever possible, but tutors give so many options, and just by having them, you get to have 2 of your best removal, 2 of your best creature, or 2 of your best counterspell. Sure, a turn 4 geddon will win the game, unless I vamp into turn 3 tinker/sundering titan. Tutors are just that powerful, and Pack one Pick one, I take gifts given or a tutor, no question.

I'm sorry play Magic for the enjoyment factor when cubing, and not for power-tripping masturbation parties. I'm not Steve!
Re: 1st pack/pick discussion CUBE! Sample A
@John, the argument I always have in my head when drafting, especially cubing, is raw power vs versatility. It kills me when I open a pack of Zendikar, say, and have to choose between a "weak bomb" or a crazy utility card. Like maybe Hellkite (5/5 flying haste guy) vs Hideous End, p1p1... I get hung up on those kinds of decisions, and I think I usually, incorrectly pick the bomb over the utility.
Interestingly, your Vamp Tutor vs Armageddon is the same choice. Do you pick the card that will win you the game on its own, or the card that allows you to immediately find your best card? It's an interesting quandry.
@Jim, those masturbation-fests we have.... ok let me start this over.
Those games that seem to go on and on really only happen in multiplayer. And in duels, a turn 4 Armageddon usually means the "playing with oneself" will only be about 3 or so more turns before your opponent scoops. I agree that in a multiplayer setting, Armageddon is just plain obnoxious and will set the rest of the players against you (unless blah blah desolation angel, blah blah John Wolsky you prick, blah blah), and you're often setting up for the long term in those games.
Besides, if you're not going to power-trip with the cube, when are you?!?

glad my thoughts on 1st picks are similar to all of yours. The only other card i would have to think over as 1st here would be profane command because of its versatility.

Dan, the versitility of the card makes it incredibly powerful. Just look at cryptic command. You have 4 options to choose from, and there is always a useful effect. The versitility of cryptic made it the most powerful card in standard for 2 years. I believe that tutor effects are the most versitile of cards, so they become the most powerful.

And then sometimes you just win while your opponent is busy being versatile.
Re: 1st pack/pick discussion CUBE! Sample A
yea, yea, but I love doing eightyeleven things before I actually interact with my opponent. Its funny to get them really worried about all the stuff Im doing, and then just die to their 2/1 savanna lion
